About Marine Area 8-1

Marine Area 8-1 covers the waters around Deception Pass and Skagit Bay, one of the most scenic and productive fishing destinations in northern Puget Sound. The strong tidal currents flowing through Deception Pass create nutrient-rich upwellings that attract baitfish and the salmon that follow them.

This area is known for excellent summer Chinook fishing, particularly around the pass itself and Rosario Beach. The rocky structure and current breaks provide ideal ambush points for salmon. Crabbing is productive in the calmer waters of Skagit Bay.

Fishing Hotspots

Deception Pass

Extreme tidal exchange funnels bait through the narrows — salmon stack at current breaks on both sides of the pass

Best for: Chinook, Coho — troll the edges, not through the pass itselfDepth: 30-80 ft along the wallsStructure: Rocky walls, kelp edges, strong current breaksBest tide: Slack before ebb — fish the transition

Rosario Beach

Protected lee of Deception Pass with structure that holds resident fish

Best for: Chinook trolling, bottomfish jigging near rocksDepth: 20-60 ftStructure: Rocky reef and kelp canopyBest tide: Flood tide pushes bait against the shoreline

Bowman Bay

Sheltered bay adjacent to the pass — great staging area for salmon entering

Best for: Chinook, Crab — good crab pots in the bayDepth: 15-40 ft in bay, deeper outsideStructure: Sandy bottom with rocky edgesBest tide: Incoming tide
