Frequently Asked Questions

When is halibut season in Puget Sound?

Halibut season typically runs April through June in Marine Areas 8-1, 8-2, 9, and 10. The exact dates are set by WDFW based on quota allocation and can close early if quota is reached.

Where can I catch halibut in Puget Sound?

Halibut are open only in Areas 8-1, 8-2, 9, and 10. Point No Point (Area 9) and the deep water off Whidbey Island are popular spots. You need to fish sandy/muddy bottom in 100-300 feet.

Do I need a descending device for halibut?

Yes. Washington State requires a descending device when fishing for halibut. This allows you to safely release undersized fish back to depth, improving survival rates.
