🏔️ Complete Guide to Fishing Point Defiance — Tacoma, WA

Why Point Defiance

Point Defiance is South Puget Sound's most famous salmon fishing destination. The steep clay banks drop from the shoreline to 200+ feet, creating an underwater wall that concentrates baitfish and holds salmon year-round. WDFW creel surveys consistently show it as one of the most productive launch sites in Puget Sound.

Recent data: Point Defiance Boathouse surveys show catch-per-angler rates of 0.19 to 0.57 Chinook — meaning roughly 1 in 2 to 1 in 5 anglers are catching a keeper.

The Spots

The Clay Banks (Main Wall): The primary fishing area. Steep underwater clay banks that drop from 40 ft to 200+ ft. Salmon patrol the edges where the ledge drops off. Troll or jig tight to the wall at 60-120 ft.

Dalco Wall: The stretch between Point Defiance and Dalco Passage. Deeper water, bigger fish. Best on the outgoing tide when bait gets pushed along the wall.

The Narrows: Tacoma Narrows has extreme current. ONLY fish during slack tide (30 minutes before and after). When the current is running, it's dangerous and unproductive. Check your tide table.

Commencement Bay: The bay east of Point Defiance. Note: Commencement Bay is currently CLOSED to salmon fishing under emergency regulations.

Launching

Point Defiance Boathouse & Ramp is the main launch. 3 lanes, $10 launch fee + $5 parking. Opens at 5 AM in spring/summer. The boathouse rents boats if you don't have your own. WDFW runs creel surveys here daily — they'll check your catch on the way in.

Gig Harbor Ramp is the alternative — single lane, free, but very limited parking. Get there early on weekends.

Narrows Marina has a protected launch and fuel dock. $15/day, good for staging jigging trips near the Narrows bridge.

Gear That Works Here

Point Defiance rewards two techniques above all others: jigging and trolling cut plug herring.

P-Line Laser Minnow (2 oz)
The #1 jig for the clay banks. Chrome finish in clear water, glow for overcast days.
Scotty 1080 Strongarm Downrigger
For trolling the wall at 60-100 ft. Manual is fine here — you're not going super deep.
Mustad 92604 Hooks (3/0)
For building herring leaders. 3/0 is the right size for 4-10 lb blackmouth.
Tip: The clay banks fish best on incoming tide. The current pushes baitfish against the wall, and salmon stack up behind them. Fish the last 2 hours of incoming and first hour of outgoing.

Tides and Timing

Tide is everything at Point Defiance. The point creates a natural funnel that concentrates current and bait.

Best tide: Incoming (flood) tide pushes bait against the clay banks. Fish stack up in ambush positions along the ledge.

Slack water: Required for jigging and for fishing the Narrows. Time your trip around slack.

Avoid: Strong ebb tide at the Narrows — the current is dangerously fast and fish scatter.

Check the NOAA tide prediction for Tacoma (Station 9446484) before every trip. Our daily report includes today's tide range and current strength assessment.

FAQ

Can I fish Point Defiance from shore?

The Point Defiance Marina Boathouse has a pier that's designated as a year-round fishing pier. You can fish from it even when the rest of Area 11 is closed. Shore fishing from the park shoreline is also possible but the fish are usually too deep for shore casting.

What depth should I fish at Point Defiance?

For trolling: 60-120 ft. Start at 70 ft and adjust. For jigging: drop to the bottom (usually 80-180 ft along the wall), then work up 50-60 cranks. Most jigging bites happen between 80-130 ft.

Is Point Defiance open for salmon fishing right now?

Area 11 regulations change frequently via WDFW emergency rules. Check our daily report or wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/emergency-rules before every trip. As of spring 2026, Area 11 has been open on a limited weekly schedule.
